- +Ogkayan Brillantes (she/her) is a passionate individual born and raised on Treaty 7 (Calgary AB) in
- +the last semester of her undergraduate degree in International Studies specializing in international
- +political economy. When she became a youth ambassador for World Vision at fifteen years old Ogkayan
- +became passionate about bringing awareness to ongoing social justice issues and climate action. As a
- +fifteen year who was self-determined to get her peers involved, she started to assist in organizing
- +workshops for young people. Several years later Ogkayan’s concern for the climate and ongoing
- +environmental issues grew in 2021 after experiencing the heat dome that affected most of western
- +Canada and the ongoing devastating forest fires.
- +
- +As a university student, Ogkayan's dedication to fostering a welcoming environment for new students,
- +particularly international students, led her to volunteer with the intercultural program on campus
- +in 2022. Her genuine desire to help others find their place and purpose in university life became
- +evident through this experience. Within a short time, she was recognized for her empathetic approach
- +and valuable insights, which prompted her to step into the student leadership role of a peer
- +instructor. As a campus peer instructor, Ogkayan now takes pride in guiding first-year students,
- +empowering them to navigate challenges, and inspiring them to discover their true potential and
- +purpose during their university journey. Her role as a student leader has taught her to be more
- +confident in her ability to make important decisions and empathetic towards others' well-being.
- +Ogkayan aspires to bring these traits as the Alberta representative for the Young Greens of Canada.
- +
- +To endorse the best interests of Albertans, Ogkayan believes that we must continue to take climate
- +action, further increase greater access to free mental health services, and remove socioeconomic
- +barriers by implementing strategies and initiatives that promote equal opportunities regardless of
- +gender, race, or sexual orientation.
- +
- +In her spare time, Ogkayan dedicates herself to a part-time remote role at Th3rdPlace, a mental
- +health and well-being start-up aimed towards university students, where she excels as a content
- +strategist, fueled by her unwavering commitment to promoting awareness about mental health issues.
