GM23-P031 Converting abandoned buildings into eco-friendly housing
Given that, for any new construction, a municipality must undertake work to connect them to water and electricity distribution, and that these highly specialized buildings are often subsequently abandoned due to bankruptcy, uglifying the urban landscape;
Canada will adopt building standards for large stores, factories and warehouses, to facilitate their subsequent conversion into ecological housing and cooperatives.
- All new mall/warehouse developments will be required to have a zero-carbon budget, and a plan for re-conversion into housing and cooperatives.
-All investor-developers will be required to pay a reserve amount into a trust account, which will be used to convert buildings into housing.
- In the event of abandonment or non-response, the municipality will reclaim the site after a one-year period of non-occupation.
A similar process, including remediation of contaminated soil and conversion into public green space, will be undertaken in the case of abandoned service stations.
