G21-P043 Acknowledgement of Institutional Racism in Canada
Submitter Name
Kayne Alleyne-Adams
Ratification Vote Results: Adopted
Proposal
The Green Party of Canada recognizes systemic racism exists throughout Canadian institutions and continues to have a negative impact on the human rights of Indigenous, Black and other people of colour in Canada. We support the recommendations and calls to action related to dismantling systemic institutional racism, anti-Black racism, anti-Indigenous racism as well as racism against other people of colour in Canada.
Objective
To support the recommendations and calls to action of the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Report on dismantling systemic racism: anti-Black, anti-Indigenous and anti-people of colour, and to fulfill our core value of Respect for Diversity.
Benefit
An explicit acknowledgement by the Green Party would exemplify our Core Value of Respect for Diversity and commits the Party as an ally to communities impacted by systemic racism. Explicit recognition of the existence of systemic racism is a key step in dismantling these systems of oppression. Due to the fact that the current GPC policy regarding racism does not adequately address the issue, a bolder statement is necessary. Currently, the federal Green Party policy book does not contain a mention of the Black community.
