Electoral platform emphasis on combatting climate change
Proposal text
Be it resolved that.
• The platform of the GPC for the next federal election focus significantly on approaches to the environmental collapse of our civilization, and that,
• The platform be fully costed to show how our platform will ameliorate the climate catastrophe.
Type of Proposal
A directive to ask the party’s Federal Council to consider an action
Objective / Benefit
The climate of the world has changed dramatically in the last few years. Everybody in Canada is aware of the extreme weather events that have become far too common. This is the opportunity the GPC has been built for and is waiting for, and we need to take full advantage of it in the next election. No other party will dare to do it.
The GPC should establish itself as only and exclusively championing solutions to this catastrophe. All policies must be cast in an environmental light. Nothing else matters.
If your proposal replaces an existing policy or policies, which one does it replace?
None and all. This directive places a very forceful emphasis on the elaboration and implementation of all our policies in the light of climate change.
List any supporting evidence for your proposal
Self-evident!
Does this proposal affect any particular group and what efforts have been made to consult with the group or groups?
This directive will require a major change in emphasis at the top planning and execution levels in the party. Nothing else matters.
Jurisdiction: Is this proposal under federal jurisdiction?
Yes
Please indicate the language the proposal is being submitted in.

Similarly to the pushback against "focus entirely", which has resulted in an adjustment I consider beneficial (to "focus significantly" - I'd even be OK with "very significantly", because climate change is the reason I became involved with the Green Party in the first place)... I think this text needs adjustment:
"The GPC should establish itself as only and exclusively championing solutions to this catastrophe. All policies must be cast in an environmental light. Nothing else matters."
Removing "only and exclusively" and "nothing else matters", would make this proposal more viable. I am in favour of climate change being the main focus of the Green Party for at least the next decade, and for longer depending on how long it takes to be assured we're well down the path to stabilizing the earth's temperature at a level that is viable. But, there are other things in the world that matter as well.
I think the key is to keep our focus on climate change, making sure not to get distracted by or have large parts of our energy absorbed by the political divisions that are in the media in a particular month or year which are not environmentally focused, while still taking good positions on the many other issues people care about. Particularly if there is an internal party conflict around an issue that is not related to the environment, I would hope we can agree to step back from that and focus our energies elsewhere. For example, a few years back when our then-leader got in a fight with a newly elected MP over Palestine, and for months on end that was what the media covered, it was incredibly frustrating and dispiriting, and there were no winners in that fight. If your proposal included language similar to "the central focus of the Green Party is the environment. The party welcomes members who hold a wide variety of different views on non-environmental issues, in line with our values and guided by the scientific consensus where one exists." I would be 100% behind it.
Shorter: I like your idea and I understand why it's important. But "nothing else matters" just isn't true.
