2024 Federal and Young Greens Council Elections
Electing the representatives of the Green Party of Canada's members
William Matheson (he/him)
Hello! I’ve been Nova Scotia’s Representative on Federal Council since June of 2022, and I’m reoffering for another term.
The last few years have not been easy ones for the Green Party of Canada, or for federal Greens in NS. We had breakthrough results here in the 2019 general election, in which 7 of 11 Green candidates received 10% or more of the votes. I managed Jo-Ann Roberts’ campaign in Halifax. But in the 2021 election, we only had 9 candidates, and none of them came close to 10%.
We need to do better in the coming general election, with a full slate of candidates and better resourced campaigns. I want to help achieve that, and to increase the number of active and sustainable EDAs in the province. My role as chair of the federal Election Readiness Committee will inform the support I can offer. And I’ve been actively involved in federal and provincial elections in Nova Scotia since 2000, first with the NDP and, since 2019, with the GPC and GPNS.
It’s no secret that the GPC have been struggling since the 2019 federal election. I believe we’re getting our feet under us again, and that we’ll be able to move forward in harmony. But I think an awareness of recent GPC history, and of the factors that have held us back, is a desirable quality. I have that knowledge, together with a determination to put the past behind us and achieve great things together. And everything we do should flow from the six Global Green Principles.
As Kermit said, “It’s not easy being green”. But it is important. Nova Scotia, Canada, and the world need the Green Party.
Please vote for me to continue as Nova Scotia’s representative on Federal Council.
Experience and Skills
Since January 1, 2019, I’ve been a member of the Green Party of Canada (GPC) and the Green Party of Nova Scotia (GPNS).
I managed Green federal campaigns in Halifax in 2019 and 2021, and was the Official Agent for the 2021 Dartmouth-Cole Harbour campaign. As a volunteer,I’ve canvassed on foot or by phone in provincial elections and federal by-elections in BC, Manitoba, Ontario, NB, PEI, and NS. I am very experienced in the use of GVote, the GPC’s electoral database.
Before election to Federal CounciI in 2022, I was a member of the Ombuds and Appeals Committee.
I'm chair of the GPC Election Readiness Committee, and a member of the Finance Committee. I was on the Governance Committee for a year.
I was a GPNS provincial Organizer in 2019/2020, and Membership Director in 2020, during which membership fees were removed for members below the age of 30. I was co-president for a year and a half, and I’m currently past president. I was Official Agent for five campaigns in 2021, and for a by-election in 2024.
As an NDP member for 20 years, I was CEO of provincial and federal EDAs, sat on the NS NDP Council and Executive, and served as provincial President. I was active in governance, acted as parliamentarian at meetings, and helped to revise the NS NDP Constitution.
I’ve been active with environmental organizations in Nova Scotia since the 1990’s, including the Wooden’s River Watershed Environmental Organization and the Ecology Action Centre.
