G21-P042 Work Towards an International Treaty Against Ecocide
Submitter Name
Amita Kuttner
Ratification Vote Results: Adopted
Proposal
The GPC will advocate for an amendment to the Rome Statute or a stand-alone international treaty criminalizing Ecocide. Ecocide is mass damage and destruction of ecosystems (widespread, severe, or systemic) committed with knowledge of the risks. The GPC will advocate for the adoption of Ecocide law federally and internationally, encouraging international collaboration for the long-term protection of life on earth.
Objective
Align GPC policy with global Green parties in supporting an International Treaty Against Ecocide. This treaty would help create the bridge to a livable world, and is oriented towards criminalizing human activity that substantially damages global ecosystems and its inhabitants, ensuring that effective enforcement is outlined for reparations and criminal penalties.
Benefit
The International Treaty Against Ecocide will act as an effective deterrent against predatory behaviour by states or businesses. Those engaged in activities contributing to ecocide cannot simply move their operations elsewhere. It makes individuals who are responsible for funding, permitting or causing severe, mass environmental harm liable to fines and criminal prosecution.
