- +The Green Party of Canada will collaborate with Indigenous, provincial and territory counterparts in
- +advocating for free post secondary education for Canadians pursuing accreditation as physicians and
- +nurses.
- +
- +Additional input and suggestion.
- +
- +To date, provincial medical associations tell us that they are only interested and focus all their
- +efforts on negotiating fees and benefits for their members. Medicine is a business and the Green
- +Party should work with medical economists willing and capable of working with and provincial and
- +national associations on industry problems.
- +
- +This would involve annual detailed surveys of willing practitioners that would be anonymized and
- +provide the organized data that associations can use in their negotiations with governments.
- +
- +RK House and Associates revolutionized the dental practices in Nova Scotia over the past 40 years
- +and is recognized by the majority of practitioners to be essential in running a successful small
- +business. Medicine is a business and can be analyzed and policies developed from organized data.
- +Other provincial dental associations slowly joined in when they slowly realized how useful this
- +approach could be for them as well as individual practices. Ron House is a graduate of the London
- +School of Economics and became a trusted essential advisor to individual dental practitioners and
- +associations. Medical association dues are kept very low as they don't provide information of the
- +type available to dentists and their associations.
- +
- +Provincial governments have maintained tight control and associations would benefit from being more
- +proactive and effective if they had health economists to work with when dealing with tight-fisted
- +bureaucracies only interested in control of the dollars spent rather than outcomes.
- +
- +This has spawned another business, that of practice coaches who can help train office administrators
- +and are effective problem solvers.
- +
- +Medicine has lost its way and this approach might put it back on track and help medical doctors
- +realize that they can overcome their fears and hire competent staff to help manage the business they
- +didn't realize they would be expected to run.
- +
- +Presently, most MD's hope that they will work in a hospital or clinic where somebody else is
- +expected to attend meetings and make all decisions. This is not feasible, advisable or economically
- +possible. We should help guide the profession so that it can return to managing their own group
- +practices with an informed trained team approach.
- +
- +Every U.S. medical graduate understands that they are a business person. Many Canadian medical
- +graduates have been led to believe that it is just a matter of pressing the right button and that
- +someone else is responsible for solving their problems. Small business is messy and that is not what
- +they want to hear. Running a small business can be taught and this may have to be accomplished
- +outside of medical schools. The professors are academics and are unwilling and unable to properly
- +prepare students with the additional skills they need to be successful in small business.
- +
- +Type of Proposal
- +
- +Enhancement of medical training by helping medical associations find medical economists to analyze
- +practices and propose solutions gained from organized data.
- +
- +Public policy that the party would represent
- +
- +To date, provincial medical associations tell us that they are only interested and focus all their
- +efforts on negotiating fees and benefits for their members. Medicine is a business and the Green
- +Party should work with medical economists willing and capable of working with and provincial and
- +national associations on industry problems.
- +
- +Objective / Benefit
- +
- +Addresses the critical shortage of nurses and doctors experienced in communities throughout Canada.
- +
- +This would involve annual detailed surveys of willing practitioners that would be anonymized and
- +provide the organized data that associations can use in their negotiations with governments and
- +potentially help change policies that aren't working for the greater good.
- +
- +If your proposal replaces an existing policy or policies, which one does it replace?
- +
- +List any supporting evidence for your proposal
- +
- +N/A
- +
- +Free medical tuition as a single solution. This can be in addition to free medical tuition to
- +address critical problems and is closer to dealing with the root problem.
- +
- +Does this proposal affect any particular group and what efforts have been made to consult with the
- +group or groups?
- +
- +I have asked the CEO of the provincial association. They are very unorganized and provide only one
- +main service to members- negotiating fees and benefits.
- +
- +Jurisdiction: Is this proposal under federal jurisdiction?
- +
- +No - health is a provincial responsibility
- +
- +Please indicate the language the proposal is being submitted in.
