Rather than restricting this to seniors, I think a Universal Basic Income is more appropriate.
The idea behind this is stated and directly affects seniors "Supports allowing Seniors to receive their full CPP entitlement at age 65 and increasing CPP, OAS and GIS benefits to meet the poverty line threshold in Canada; and Supports that the Canadian Seniors Drug and Medical Plan will cover all costs for seniors, including the co-pay fees charged by the pharmacy, and cover other related medical costs up to 80%." Some people are forced to apply early for their Canada Pension plan and lose 50% of it and they are penalized for it. The idea is seniors when they turn 65 should get the full Canada Pension Plan they would have been entitled to. Right now seniors 85 or older get an extra benefit and seniors over 75 get dental benefits, not those who are 65. I currently get myself $343 of my CPP which should be $686. I live on just over $2000 a month and because I have a roof over my head I am not eligible for housing I have been on the list for 7 years waiting and was told unless I am on the street I will not be considered as a priority. I am a diabetic yet I eat once a day it is all I can afford. Rents are high I cannot afford $1900 for a bachelor in a decent building. The house I live in will be torn down in about a year and I cannot afford high rents. Universal basic income would be great but seniors need action now before people like me end up eating every two days. I have to pay for a dental plan government of NB will not cover what I need unless I cash in my burial insurance then they would cover other medical services and equipment I need. I am in debt at 67 because of covid and I have to pay out of my pocket. This is a policy that needs action now. I am tired of going all day without food and paying on debits created because I turn 65 and covid. This is an urgent need as others but I am grasping at straws and I know this time next year I could be on the street
