Condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine
Proposal text
The GPC unequivocally condemns Russia's illegal destabilization, invasion, and on-going occupation of Ukraine.
The GPC supports all reasonable means, including providing protective weapons to Ukraine, to end Russia’s illegal occupation of Ukrainian territory recognized by the 1991 Declaration of Independence of Ukraine.
Type of Proposal
Public policy that the party would represent
Objective / Benefit
This policy proposal is designed to update previous Green Party policy with regards to the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. It is a proposal that will better reflect the reality of the situation since the illegal and unprovoked mass invasion of Ukraine by the Russian state in February 2022, in line with public statements by sitting Members of Parliament since that time.
Furthermore this proposal brings the Green Party in line with the will of the democratically elected institutions of Ukraine, Canada’s international partners, and Ukrainians in general to pressure the Russian state to vacate all sovereign Ukrainian territory lost since 2014.

This proposal, while noteworthy in its concern for the people of Ukraine, is not consistent with Global Green Principle of non-violence and will not support a diplomatic solution to the conflict, a conflict that has deep roots (best explained in this Jeffrey Sachs interview: https://youtu.be/jj7c4O8iJSg?si=XTw3osq7gzXwY0yt).
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia is indeed long and complex - but the current state is not. Unequivocally the Russian Federation invaded and occupied territory of its neighbourhing sovereign state, a democracy whose borders were guaranteed by that very aggressor is now violating.
There is no current diplomatic solution to the conflict because the Russian state is not interested in any process that doesn't include their right to unilaterally conquer and absorb occupied land, and dictate at a national and local level the way Ukrainians govern themselves and determine their own future.
If our goal is a peaceful, diplomatic end to the conflict - Ukrainians must be able to defend themselves. I am open to further language making clear our preference for diplomacy, but we are not currently there and, as such, the Green Party of Canada should be in line with Green parties the world over, as well as our political allies among progressives and conservatives. That is why this resolution exists and I hope you consider supporting Anne.
Kyle,
"the current state" cannot be divorced from Ukrains/Russia long & complex history
and you can add to that from the long & well documented history of the USA/NATO interfering in other countries' businesses by carrying out coups and regime change. We need not as a party condone or support these illegal & criminal acts.
