I am neutral at this point since my lack of experience in this issue leaves me somewhat confused why this is a perennial concern. I am not sure that just spending money on more is really the answer. To me the question is really why do we need so many more doctors? I am also not sure that more Doctors are what we need. I suspect a better approach would be more wellness professionals that can help people stay healthy enough not to need so many doctors....prevention rather than after the fact patch-ups. This may also trigger the need for more regulations on unhealthy food production.
I agree we should be talking about this at the policy table but given the cost of tuition these days many people can't really find the funds to get the initial bachelor's degree. Although I think we should be implementing some form of universal university education supplement, we could target more support for those wishing to enter certain fields (health care in this instance) that could be predicated on continuing in that vein after their initial degree. Perhaps an interest free loan with interest starting to accrue only if they did not follow through with a commitment to stated intent. There are many ways to deal with this and examples from other countries that we could follow.
