Green Party calls on Israel to end human rights atrocities against the people of Palestine
Whereas, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), and the Israeli human rights groups B’Tselem and Yesh Din have all stated that Israel is committing the crime of apartheid, which is the second worst crime against humanity (after genocide), and And whereas Israel’s policies such as forced evictions, home demolitions, and separation of Palestinian families across all territories under its control amount to apartheid, and whereas the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in OPT stated that the political system of entrenched rule in the occupied Palestinian territory satisfied the prevailing evidentiary standard for the existence of apartheid.
And whereas Green Party leader Elizabeth May has acknowledged that what Israel is doing to Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian Territories is “much worse” than apartheid in South Africa.
And whereas Israel is committed gross human rights atrocities against the Palestinians of Gaza, requiring greens of conscience to speak out immediatly.
Be it resolved that this proposal will be decided by the Green Party of Canada general meeting of February 2024 and not be postponed to a policy development process.
And be it further resolved that the Green Party of Canada hereby acknowledges and declares Israel to be an apartheid state and calls on Israel to end its human rights abuses against the people of Palestine.
And be it further resolved that the Green Party of Canada endorses the findings of the International Court of Justice with respect to charges of genocide brought against Israel by South Africa.
And be it further resolved that the Green Party of Canada supports the restoration of full funding to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) that was cut by Canada and other nations January 26, 2024.

The only position that the government of Canada, or any major Canadian political party, should take on this issue, is to encourage the two sides to stop fighting and meet. Stepping uninvited into someone else's dispute rarely makes friends, and often makes enemies. Taking a side would negate any possibility of being a mediator. When the issue was publicly debated by party members before the last election, our election chances were crushed. Many anti-greens still maintain that the party is antisemitic. Although I have strong opinions of my own on the issue, I consider the fact that I only view it from afar. I would not express those opinions in a Green Party publication. That would likely do more harm than good.
What is happening to Palestinians is ethnic cleansing at the hands of Israeli settler terrorists. Their actions are terrorism if Canadian law was applied. Remaining neutral only gives the Israeli settler terrorists a tacit endorsement to continue their violent ethnic cleansing unopposed. Approved party policy passed by a wide margin calls for specified sanctions against Israeli entities. This policy is consistent with the theme that pressure must be applied.
