Green Party calls on Israel to end human rights atrocities against the people of Palestine
Whereas, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), and the Israeli human rights groups B’Tselem and Yesh Din have all stated that Israel is committing the crime of apartheid, which is the second worst crime against humanity (after genocide), and And whereas Israel’s policies such as forced evictions, home demolitions, and separation of Palestinian families across all territories under its control amount to apartheid, and whereas the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in OPT stated that the political system of entrenched rule in the occupied Palestinian territory satisfied the prevailing evidentiary standard for the existence of apartheid.
And whereas Green Party leader Elizabeth May has acknowledged that what Israel is doing to Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian Territories is “much worse” than apartheid in South Africa.
And whereas Israel is committed gross human rights atrocities against the Palestinians of Gaza, requiring greens of conscience to speak out immediatly.
Be it resolved that this proposal will be decided by the Green Party of Canada general meeting of February 2024 and not be postponed to a policy development process.
And be it further resolved that the Green Party of Canada hereby acknowledges and declares Israel to be an apartheid state and calls on Israel to end its human rights abuses against the people of Palestine.
And be it further resolved that the Green Party of Canada endorses the findings of the International Court of Justice with respect to charges of genocide brought against Israel by South Africa.
And be it further resolved that the Green Party of Canada supports the restoration of full funding to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) that was cut by Canada and other nations January 26, 2024.

To not call out an allied nation on gross violation of human rights, international conventions and UN resolutions, opens doors for both external and internal (domestic) forces to crack open the Western constitutional state with its foundation in democracy, a fair legal system and protection of civil liberties.
The west is dwindling in power, economically, military, academically and probably on more levels. If we also give up on our intent to be a leader in democracy, human rights and civil protections, by not only allowing, but possibly even empowering allied nations to destroy peoples they have occupied, we will not only lose our voice on the world stage, but also open doors to return back to more open and accepted forms of colonization, occupation and repression of dissent in our own country.
I am extremely disappointment in the reaction of the western leaders to the violence that the Netanyahu-government has been applying in the past months in Gaza and the occupied territories, with record breaking numbers of casualties, injuries and incarcerations among civilians: children, women, journalists, aid workers, you name it. And of course, this is not something that started on October 7th 2023, this has been going on for decades.
I wrote my conservative MP, who (not surprisingly) declared to be fully supporting Israel in line with his party. Which in my books might as well mean that the Conservative Party, which already shows that it leans towards more authoritarian tendencies, is not necessarily condoning human rights violations. So, if not in Israel, why not also here? The Liberals are a bit more diplomatic in that way, but they as well are primarily concerned with keeping Israel (Netanyahu cs) befriended.
I hope for at least one Canadian political party that dares to speak up for Human Rights and the International Legal Order, to not only do the utmost they can to stop the horrors of the Palestinian people, but also to show our own government and the global community that some part of Canada still stands for democracy, Human Rights and Freedom -although that last word is a bit charged by now.
Also, in the light of our commitment to the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission: our government has stated that it opposes ALL forms of colonialism. I recommend that our Green Party holds them to that and that it will call out any cases where our government is actually supporting colonial regimes in the repression of the native population.
