I think you need to specify medical school and diploma (practical nurse) & baccalaureate (registered nurse) level nursing school. Physicians completing residency programs get paid so they should not be getting free education.
I also have to be honest in saying I dont actually agree with this policy even though I would have benefited if the GPC formed government. More people apply to medical school than there are medical school spaces, so cost is not the limiting factor. The shortages in health care are not limited to physicians and nurses- there are shortages of PSWs and Allied Health Care Providers.
Lastly, there are shortages in other important employment sectors, not just in health care.... the issues in health care are very complex and transcend the cost of school, I honestly dont think free educationwill solve the issues
I'd support changing "doctors and nurses" to "health care workers". Midwives in Ontario are discriminated against by not getting an income during their equivalent of residency years, while nurses and doctors do get paid. PSWs need higher incomes and stable employment.
I agree wholeheartedly! However, on the other hand, there's something to be said about creating election-ready policies - doctor and nurse shortages are going to be a major 2025 election issue.
I think a separate policy proposal on midwives is required, however this is a provincial issue, not federal. PSW's absolutely, 100% need better and more stable working benefits! Again, also provincial.
Overall, federal jurisdiction is not in health, but the doctor and nurse shortage is pan-Canadian, and it behooves the federal level to create a task force to address it together, in concert with all stakeholders.
On the other hand, perhaps my motion should be massaged to include these health care spheres in the conversation for financial support post-sec?
I agree, that in the networking between Indigenous communities, federal and provincial and local levels, with schools and other stakeholders, that the pathways to increasing numbers of nurses and doctors will be multiple and various. The pressure points on why we simply don't have enough (and are in a health care provider crisis) are multiple and various. Creating spaces is the key requirement, so funding towards that (in the form of tuition support) is a fix. Mostly, this wording asks Greens across the country to start meeting and collaborating and talking about this issue NOW, not when/if we form government, but now. Just as per this conversation on this website, we see a huge treasure chest of Green expertise. Let's capitalize on that!
